Angies List - Membership Review from Columbus, Ohio

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I joined Angie's List on 3/22/15. I did not notice any difference in the reviews there from those you can get free, via my local BBB, except for the listing of medical providers, which when u access, Angie bills u an additional $5.99. So I decided to terminate effective the end of the first month I had paid for, 4/22/15. Danielle, the customer rep., told me that she could not arrange my termination for 4/22 because I was calling on 4/9. She said that I had to terminate effective today (4/9), or wait and call back on 4/22. I terminated effective today, fearing that if I waited, Angie's list would charge me another month. I find it interesting that Angie's list can efficiently add additional charges to your billing, but the task of terminating your membership when you ask is beyond their ability. Angie's list originated in Central Ohio & I was a member then when they provided high quality service. It appears that their national success has caused a serious decline in their service.

Angies List is Pay for Play

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Angie's List is where people who already have trust issues with Contractors go - the problem is the entire game is rigged as usual. We were an AL company and all they want from us is MONEY.

We get calls from people we would never do business with because they are already so freaked out by what might happen or their last experience with a contractor. Most of us (contractors) do honest work for fair prices, not all but the ones who have been in business over 10 years. What the public doesn't understand is what we go through just to be able to provide you the public with service. We are constantly harassed by OSHA, Building Code Enforcement, The EPA, IRS, Workman's Comp, the city, the county, the state, the feds.

We train our people to no only be good builders but they also have to constantly be aware of what they say, how they say it and who is listening - we have to act like investigators during additions and remodeling, Lawyers when we write contracts and still we get treated like thieves when we ask to get paid. If the average person understood how difficult it is to become a contractor, all the red tape we must cut through every time we practice our trade - if they say how we get constantly bombarded by new and ridiculous codes and laws - NO ONE WOULD BECOME A CONTRACTOR BY CHOICE. However, I happen to work for a guy who has a passion for building and is quite good at it. We are people just like you.

Angie's List took 2400.00 from us last year and we got ZERO from it. Now they come back to us and want us to spend 16K this year and they swear it will be different this time. Think about this people - If you add up all of the costs - WC, Insurance, Vehicles, Maintenance, Tools, Continuing Education, Overhead and Consumables - where is there room for a 16K program that nets you nothing? Can't anyone understand why it costs 125.00/hour to have a guy come to your home in a truck?

Does anyone go to the car dealership and expect a free engine diagnosis? Do you get free Doctor visits? We bust our butts to serve our customers - Angie's List complicates the process and gives folks a false sense of security because one need only pay to play... Stop being lazy and do your own homework - call the chamber of commerce - look up public records and see who has had legal action and how it was resolved.

We look at you the same way - we have to because we have been burned by people of limited integrity too.

Meet with us - talk to people - find out who you can trust and then get involved. A much better process than a web service could ever hope to provide.

Refund policy on coupon orders not fulfilled

Placed an order for air conditioner tune up March 30. Paid the $39.00 fee and was NOT told that Angie list would NOT refund after 30 days from order. Company who was to preform the job kept canceling appointments they made with me four times so now the 30 day refund is past. I was told they could fine me a more expensive Co. to do the job if I would pay the difference. I said NO. Asked if I could apply the $39.00 toward membership renewal and was told NO. This is not a way to treat long standing customers.

Brush removal and low lying branches, for fire abaitment

There is a terrible fire danger in northern California because of the drought and I have had great difficulty finding a landscape company or tree company to clean up my property of dead brush. I am 74 years old, had recent surgery and can't do it my self. There are hundreds of landscapers around here who will cut the grass and blow the leaves around, then VANISH IN 20 MINUTES. The tree companies only want to cut the dead tree into sections, which the fire dept. has stated is not needed. No one will clean up all of the dead and dying brush that is CREATED by lack of water. The Fire Marshal has set a deadline of 15 June to complete this work. There are millions of people without jobs who would be glad to do this work with some supervision. Can you help. Useless service - do not waste your money and time

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Their service was useless but I signed up for a year so i figured I wasted my money. BUT NO they renewed my subscription automatically and charged my credit card - again I figured I'd eat the cost for not reading the fine lines. But to top it off I can't cancel online. I had to call their main number and from there was transferred to the local/Denver representative office where I left a voice mail - very annoying process to cancel. Anyone even considering this service is wasting their money. You will get emails and a monthly mailing that are full of worthless information. There is NOTHING to gain from Angie's List and a headache to get out of the contract.

We agreed to advertise and after 6 months with no results, we upgraded our advertising (their recommendation). Jan 27,2015 we sign up, Angie`s List charges us but never updated our account for the website. After more than a month of calls without a return call and constant change of my Angie`s List sales rep on my online profile, the new rep says: I was out all month of February and let me see what i can do. Again with nothing being done to help us, I call up ready to cancel and was charged 35% of the program cost of which they never even set up for my buisness.

Spending $400.00 per month on Angie's List advertising. Angie's List promised leads and jobs...NOT ONE lead or call. Now we pay them $400.00 per month for NOTHING!!! They tell their customers that no contractors pay them, well we did! And still do... $400.00 per month for NOTHING. They assign some teenager to "handle" my account and get me work through some "call center" they brag about. They assign you counties and it is a RIP-OFF. Contractors---do not fall for it. They claim to be the ones keeping contractors honest, well who is keeping Angie's list honest?

Angie's List is not trustworthy

We signed up for Angie's list as we are in a new area. Through Angie's List we purchased a coupon for home maintenance service. The company itself is great - the technician arrived on time and within 15 minutes of assessing our needs told us his company does not do this kind of service. He suggested we contact Angie's List to get a refund of the service we purchased. Well .... Angie's List did not accurately record what the service technician found and reported to them - said the technician started the work we paid for, so Angie's List would not refund our money. That is not correct. The company owner spoke to us via phone and confirmed what this technician said. No work was done as the work needed was beyond the scope of the service this company provides. We do not wish to deal with Angie's List again and have chosen not to renew our subscription.

3rd time not a charm

Foundation repair, worse than before fixed, huge gaps by windows, they said they would be carefully with plants, they ripped them up and payed on driveway. Rewireing, the company hired people standing in front of Home Depot. The owner didn't do any work, his subcontractor was licensed, but told us where he got his helpers. Holes and gouges in walls and woodwork, asked them to put an extra plug in the breakfast room, they put a plug in, but disconnected the other plug. When they put in fire alarms, they cut two holes in a couple of rooms and left the spare hole open. Left pencil marks and saw cuts all around the plug and switch areas. Just called washer repair to come back out 4th time in two weeks. Paid 79.00 for service call and 320.00 parts and labor. They said needed new pump. Still get the F06 signal and it stops draining. Now the 45 minute load takes two hours and the clothes are still dripping wet.

All they care about is making money - Not Performance or Customer Service

We are a local professional remodeling company in town and was sought out by Angies List 2 years ago because it is no secret that we are the best in town. After 2 years of promising they can put us in front of a larger audience and higher ROI than our current marketing plans, we discussed pricing. They wanted $5,000 to list in one category, and we don't live in a huge town. We negotiated to $2,000 for the year. We only received one phone call for the entire year and Angies List kept trying to push these "Big Deals" on us for services we don't even offer. After telling them "would you sell a big deal for roofing to a landscaper, because that is pretty much what your pushing us into here," their response was merely "if the landscaper can do it!"...Not, are they the most qualified, or is that what they even specialize in. To give an example, they wanted to sell us a handyman deal where you can hire one of our general contractors for 6 hours for only $199. But here's the catch, Angies List makes 50% of that $199...So they rudely were trying to sell me a deal where I would have to lose money getting one of my guys to do something that we don't even offer and half the value they are selling it for. Being really frustrated that they only cared to make money off me rather than promote MY SERVICES, which average around $40,000 per project, not handyman stuff, I spoke with a manager regarding this. They didn't care one bit about my experience and said that "clearly you don't want to increase your business by not offering our big deal promotions," even though once again we do not do handyman work PERIOD! The year was up and they wanted to renew our contract. This time the price was now $12,000 for an annual price. I told them to take a hike! The point is...Angies List doesn't care about your performance as a company, your quality, or even if you offer the services for the category they want you in. ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY! As a customer or consumer you are sure of one thing, your are paying a fee for Angies List to provide to you a contractor that got suckered into to their BS and whom may not even be qualified whatsoever to do your work at all but is "Angies List Preferred" only meaning they are paying for that title.

Angies List - Online Review Review from Bossier City, Louisiana

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I joined Angie's List thinking that in a city the size of Shreveport it would have plenty of worthwhile reviews. While remodeling a house I went to AL many times but rarely found even one review for the businesses I was searching. I found better reviews on other search sites that didn't cost me a dime And actually think the BBB was a better place to look. Don't waste your money.

That was my experience as well. Few services and businesses are reviewed and when they are, not much information is included (such as charges).

Most business are many miles away and none are local. Most that are reviewed have one single review.

That just isn't helpful. Angies List isn't worth the money or effort.

Will never use them again - they remove bad reviews - don't trust them.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I wrote a review of a landscaping company that took money for a job they did not complete. The review was extensive with pictures etc... The company lied about the work they did, they wouldn't return phone calls or texts and refused to refund my money. I wrote a negative review and was soon contacted by Angie's list staff asking if I wanted them to assist in a resolution. I agreed. They contacted the company who at the very last second agreed to reimburse me 1/2 my money. I agreed because 1/2 is better than nothing. I then get an email from Angie's list that they are now removing my negative review and if I want to give this company either an "A" or "B" rating, I can submit another review. What the heck? This company is terrible! Why in the world would I want to give them a positive review. I would have been happy to update my complaint to include the resolution but, to completely remove the review all together and force me to give a positive review is ridiculous! Can you imagine all the really terrible companies out there who can toss a few dollars to unhappy customers just to get their negative reviews removed? Angie's list is completely unreliable. I will never use them again.

I agree. I had a very negative experience with one of their endorsed & advertised contractors.

They never even printed the complaint or put them in their "Penalty Box." We have cancelled our subscription and will NEVER use Angie's List Again. I tell everyone now to steer clear of anyone on their list!

Was going to open an account.

I sent a deposit & gave my basic information with a potential start up of spring. Now its the 1st day of spring and Angie's trying to get money from my bank account to pay for my listing even though it is not set up. This real classy lady who advertises all over and tells everyone how wonderful they are for everyone really only wants the auto deduct every month. Just like her salesman, he new my stuff wasn't ready & because of his commission he made sure they hit my bank account. Now I have told them what I feel and I do not want to do business with them because of that, they would not refund my deposit, they said they want to charge a cancellation fee. So lets recap, I talk to some Angie"s List salesman for a total of one hour, tell him what I'm looking for and what I do. He tells me how they work and what their gonna do for me. Takes My deposit than doesn't speak to me for over 2 months. How about I'm not ready to go yet and we never had a formal starting date. No even though I'm not set up go into my account and draw money. A real class act. The only one this Angie's worried about is Angie

Angies List was paid but we never received the services

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Angie's List provided a contract to have a painter(KJ Construction) for a day at $199.00 in November of 2014. Actually, the contractor told us he would only do a small wall/area of our dining area for that price. Angie's List says that they will refund your original agreement price in 30 days or less if you are NOT happy. I did not notice that but, the contractor told us from the beginning that he would not be able to do the job (although very small) IN 2014. Therefore, the job would occur in 2015 there goes your refund capability! It is March of 2015 and nothing has happened yet! I telephoned "Angie's List," and they were saying I would not get a refund but, a possible swap and tried to get me/us to try a better membership package. Well, I responded that I was uncertain I even wanted to be an "Angie's List," member at all. I don't know if my complaint will yield any results or refunds. This web agency promises to screen their candidates and doesn't and then says well too bad but, we can offer you a better deal (slash more money!) if you are not satisfied, that is rubbish and totally scam worthy!

BEWARE! Signing up means constant phone harrassment

About 2 years ago I signed up with Angie's List looking for a Contractor for a bathroom remodel. I ultimately chose two from the list. One came out, looked over my bathroom and told me he wouldn't give me a bid unless I signed a contract with him first. The second Contractor told me he didn't have time to write a bid. Both of these Contractors were highly recommended on Angie's List. I canceled my account immediately. I ultimately found a great Contractor through a friend and am thrilled with my new bathroom. This alone is enough reason to avoid Angie, but what I didn't know was that by signing up I was subjecting myself to constant phone solicitations from Contractors looking for work. Nothing I say or do has slowed the onslaught of unwanted, sometimes rude, people calling me looking for construction work. When I ask what company they work for, they say the person they send to my house for a bid will tell me. Really! I apparently need to make an appointment to meet my tormentor before I can find out who my tormentors are! I have Angie to thank for this. I'm reduced to writing down phone numbers and submitting them to the "do not call" registry as harassers. If you want to pay for bad advice and constant phone harassment, you will indeed love Angie.

Angie's list sounded fishy to me from the very beginning. I would NEVER pay for a review of anyone.

That is simply absurd. I would rather ask people I know who they have used. What a racket! The people who use this service need to pay to have "SUCKER" removed from their forehead.

I guess there really is a sucker born every minute.

As an FYI, I was in a free period with Angie's List and ultimately, never paid them a dime. Since Angie's List claims they don't sell personal info, I thought I was safe.

Even if I'd paid them and they didn't claim they wouldn't sell personal data, I wouldn't deserve what happened. Blaming the victim is, and always will be, reprehensible.
