Angies List in Terre Haute, Indiana - Automatically renewed my subscription without my permission

1.0
Details
I did not want to renew Angie's list and they renewed my subscription without my permission and caused my rent check to bounce. Beware! I am a paycheck to paycheck person and had no idea this was going to be renewed without my knowledge or consent. They use pay pal which means I can't get it back in my account for at least 3 days and there is a hold on the refund. It has of course cleared my checking which made my rent check bounce. Do not subscribe to Angie's List. You'll be sorry. Stay away. Beware. Keep away.

Angies List - Angie's List Won't Fix Their Mistake

A business associate of mine uses Angie’s list to advertise his/her company via the Big Deal program. The Big Deal that he/she chose to run was only valid in a particular area. As a result of how Angie’s List is set up, customers outside of the valid area are able to see the Big Deals outside of their area, which would be completely acceptable would it be that they were not intending to use it outside of the valid area. Instead, Angie’s List allowed the customer to purchase the Big Deal although the customer’s address did not fall within the valid service area. When my associate saw that the customer was outside of the valid area, he/she contacted Angie’s List to determine what best course of action to take. The time of the customer’s appointment arrived without response from Angie’s List. Not wanting to anger the customer, my associate explained the situation indicating the Big Deal could not be honored but offered a similar price to the customer in order to avoid obtaining an angry review. The customer proceeded to contact Angie’s List for a refund on the Big Deal and they denied the customer the refund indicating that it was the responsibility of the business to refund the Big Deal. My associate indicated to Angie’s List that the customer should not have been able to purchase the Big Deal being outside of the valid area to which Angie’s List responded that because my associate had given the customer the desired service, a customer was thus gained via Angie’s List therefore making the servicing business responsible for the refund. My associate did not want that person as a customer based on location and only honored the customer request because of Angie’s List’s poor software.

Angies List in Whittier, California - False advertising

Update by user Dec 05, 2014

As a follow up to my November 5 post, I tried the same Google search and got a similar link from Angies List, claiming that "59 Hypnotherapy are in Whittier." I didn't bother to log in to check the locations. My conclusion stands: Angie's List may be okay for plumbers or painters, but probably not good for niche service providers.

Original review posted by user Nov 05, 2014

I searched for hypnotherapist in my city using Google, and a link to Angie's List came up. The page read "57 Hypnotherapy are in [city]" and "4 Hypnotherapy in [city] are top rated." Well, I knew there weren't 57 hypnotherapists in my city, but I figured they would list some who were in nearby cities. After paying both the basic membership fee and an additional fee to use the healthcare list, I discovered that most of the listings were very far away -- too far to be practical for visiting, say, once a week. In addition, the list of "top rated" people included an acting coach. That acting coach may use hypnosis in coaching, but that doesn't make him/her a hypnotherapist. Angie's list may be useful if you're looking for a house painter or plumber, but I recommend you do NOT sign up just to use it to search for more specialized services.

Angies List in Elmhurst, Illinois - Pay or die.

I didn't even know I was on it until I had a new client call who found me there. I received a number of calls and good reviews and Super Service Award two years in a row. I think it may have been when they were first starting out. Since I do not pay their fees to up my place in results I have found myself getting almost zero calls from Angies subscribers. It seems from the last one I heard from, Angies makes it almost impossible for their subscribers to just narrow results to close to home. Instead she said that only the services that pay for placement pop up. I refuse to pay their bribes to have my name found and feel their subscribers are not getting all the options available. You SHOULD NOT have to pay this service to have your company found by a potential client that is doing a geographical search for a provider close to their home!

You Contractors keep complaining like crybabies! This is America and you know what is a Scam Pal Obamacare, paying higher taxes for Illegals and Entitlement Takers, and outright Big Govt Takeover!

How's that for a Scam. Why your thinking about this. Paying $9,10 per person at the Movies and even more at the concession stand is a real ripoff! There's Angies List where you pay, then there's Home Advisors which is Free.

The Economy is hurting everyone. Don't blame Angie Hicks blame your Politicians!

Angies List in Orlando, Florida - Angie's List Service Provider's Have NO RIGHTS!

UPDATE........... First, we would like to thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to read this. We hope that our professionalism, integrity and honesty will help you in making the decision to hire us. Angie's List (AL) is a ONE sided company. We were Service Providers (SP) up until October 13, 2014 but no longer hold that position as Angie's List has made the decision to "excluded us from category and keyword searches and maintain our ineligibility to advertise or obtain a Super Service Award". This decision was made through the Angie's List SP Integrity Department because we "stood up" for our Company by responding to a review that was recently placed on our page. AL states that they have an open forum when it comes to reviews, however that is a COMPLETE & BLATANT lie. AL allows the Members to write whatever they want, whenever they want and about whomever (SP) they want even if it is NOT the truth. Example #1 If A Member states that they called a SP and that SP did not return the call, AL permits that Member to write an "F" review... Example #2 Members are allowed to upload pictures along with their review, but what do the SP get? Oops, nothing! SP are only allowed to reply to the review in writing but at NO TIME are SP allowed to upload any before and after pictures. Example #3 Member's Refund... SP do not deal with refunds if we have not performed any work. That is the SOLE responsibility of AL. A few times we have had to provide refunds directly through AL for different reasons, (scheduling problems or project not under our "scope of work") but did you know that Member Services will tell the Member that they HAVE TO provide an "C-F" rating for a refund? Yes, that is correct! A Member MUST provide an "C-F" rating in order to escalate their refund request... So in the meantime, the SP's overall rating and reputation are damaged while AL verifies information from both parties, (sometimes this can take weeks) so in the meantime, if another Member views our profile, they view these "F" ratings. Example #4 Members are permitted to write a review on a SP even though it is the wrong Company they are writing a review about. Yes, this has happened several times. Members have called in or emailed a review on L&D Renovations when we don't even know of this Member. In fact, after receiving a recent "F" review, we contacted AL and explained that the Member made a mistake in the SP's name, but nothing was done. We had to actually visit this Member's home only to find out that this Member DID hire a SP (Not us) and when she requested a review form to fill out, AL emailed her one with our name on it. Not noticing that the SP name was incorrect, she completed the review and submitted same. It is too late now, but it took us to drive to her home and request that the Member retract her review. Again, AL did NOTHING! It's pretty sad that we had to take time out of our busy schedule to track down a Member to save our ***! Example #5 The last 'F" review, dated September 30, 2014 was the review that made us write "Our View On Angie's List". This Member lied throughout his entire review and AL did nothing to stop it. When we called him "out on it", that is when L&D Renovations' contract was terminated. He stated the following but "for some unknown reason" this Member's review has been deleted however our response is still up for Members to view... I guess, he figured out that he was caught in several lies. Member Comments: I called to find out if they were available they said they could go over the house, give a price and then go to work the next day. My fear was because they had a $250 coupon that there rates would be jacked up to give the appearance they where giving you a discount. Prior to them coming we had gotten prices from both Lowe's and Home depot to we had an idea. There charges would have been 3 times the amount the store would have charged me. So much for coupons and deals, it would have worked out to over $100 hour per worker. good money. . I was strange when I asked if I should buy the coupon on line she was insisted that they would just give me the discount and not to worry purchasing it on line with Angies?? strange. We refused to do work with them, it they can't be trusted with the little things how could you trust them with the big things... Beware of folks barring gifts, be a smart consumer and know what other charge. !!!!! F.Y.I Members pay a annual fee $40.00 (sometimes changes), but did you know how much a SP pays? Thousands a month! To upload our SP's information without any advertising, that's free. Advertising rates depend upon what the SP wants... (We have paid $60 - $160 per month) Now for the Member's Big Deals, that is where the fees go "through the roof". Those fees range from 25% - 50%... (The most we have paid is 40%)... Oh, but wait... SP can not offer Big Deals unless we advertise. You see Members, when you buy a big deal, we DO NOT get all of the money... Yes, that is correct. When a Member purchases a Big Deal, the credit card information is given DIRECTLY to AL. We, the SP do not see that information WHATSOEVER! Example #1 A Member purchases a Big Deal for $149.00; SP only receives $89.40 Example #2 A Member purchases a Big Deal for $250.00 for $500.00 worth of labor; SP only receives $150.00 Example #1 A Member purchases a coupon for $1000.00 for an interior paint project ; SP only receives $750.00 Now, with all that said, I would like to state that AL's concept works. Members have saved money, while, yes we the SP's also made money, however it is time that Members know what truly goes on "behind closed door". AL's only takes care of their Members. Angie herself should realize that without her SP's she wouldn't have the business (money) she has now. Yes, she also needs Members, however Angie is not "laughing all the way to the bank" from the Member's money, it is the SP fees that help her do that. Oh, and SP's can't even talk or email Angie directly. We do not have the right to know or are NOT important enough for that. We know that not all people act in the same manner and most Homeowners realize that some projects do not "go as planned" so after reading our "Views", we would like to thank you by offering you 10% discount off our Labor (up to $250.00). You can also save on other projects by visiting our coupons page. Coupons expire December 31, 2014 Only Good For Orange Osceola & Seminole Counties (Florida)

I have a painting company in Texas an have to agree with you . Now with the storefront deals right next to the companies that pay to advertise she is trying to squeeze more out of us SP that is making Angies List look more an more like Craigs list .

A painter is offering 1 room painted for $110 another painter offering 2 story house painted he supplies high quality Sherwin Williams A-100 for under $1500 with out looking at it just buy it thru Angies .After paying her %15 how do they pay taxes .Got to be to much cut throat for me .

Angies List is greedy T - Rex that needs to be put to sleep I now offer Big savings for non Angies List members up to %20 . If they call me an tell me there Angies List I just say show me 2 or 3 bids from Angies List as long as its not store front or Big Deal I can beat them usualy 5 - 10% as I am no longer paying extremely high fees every month like the top of the list pays to Angies Lisy

I wondered how they made their money. I was suspicious that the contractors had to pay to be on the site, which really doesn't give the consumer a fair shake for the money they spend for reviews.

I am also confused why I should pay Angie's List who then in turn pays the contractor?

What?? No thanks, word of mouth sounds safer.

Angies List in Palos Park, Illinois - Angie's List has deceptive billing practices.

In October of 2013 Angie's List tried to obtain (unbeknownst to me) a $28 renewal fee from my PayPal account; however there was only $14.50 in the account. I guess the account was linked to my checking account at my local bank because PayPal took out the additional needed to pay the renewal, all unknown to me. (My PayPal account is linked to an occasionally used email address I have). When I found this out months later after trying to tap into my PayPal account and having no balance, I tried to cancel my Angie's List membership. Rather than allow a cancellation over the internet, they require you to talk to a service representative, just as if you were trying to cancel your AOL (remember?) No thanks, Angie!

Angies List - Will never use them again - they remove bad reviews - don't trust them.

I wrote a review of a landscaping company that took money for a job they did not complete. The review was extensive with pictures etc... The company lied about the work they did, they wouldn't return phone calls or texts and refused to refund my money. I wrote a negative review and was soon contacted by Angie's list staff asking if I wanted them to assist in a resolution. I agreed. They contacted the company who at the very last second agreed to reimburse me 1/2 my money. I agreed because 1/2 is better than nothing. I then get an email from Angie's list that they are now removing my negative review and if I want to give this company either an "A" or "B" rating, I can submit another review. What the heck? This company is terrible! Why in the world would I want to give them a positive review. I would have been happy to update my complaint to include the resolution but, to completely remove the review all together and force me to give a positive review is ridiculous! Can you imagine all the really terrible companies out there who can toss a few dollars to unhappy customers just to get their negative reviews removed? Angie's list is completely unreliable. I will never use them again.

I agree. I had a very negative experience with one of their endorsed & advertised contractors.

They never even printed the complaint or put them in their "Penalty Box." We have cancelled our subscription and will NEVER use Angie's List Again. I tell everyone now to steer clear of anyone on their list!

Angies List in Dublin, Ohio - Major Selection Bias

1.3
Details
There's a huge problem with how Angie's list is setup, and that is there is no way to submit an anonymous review. So I had a horrendous experience with a contractor who would come to work on my house in the AM high, and would spend barely any time at my house so he could work on one of his other 3 projects at other places. His work was so bad I kicked him out & paid him extra so I could break the contract. He had a small # but all good ratings on Angie's. I went to write a review, only to find that I was required to leave my name, phone # AND email with the rating, with an expected reply from the contractor. Well, I decided not to risk that for fear of reprisal. A neighbor had the exact same experience but was also unwilling to submit a review for the same reasons! So it's very difficult to place a bad rating on Angie's list, which is why most of the ratings are good.
