I thought you couldn't pay to be on Angies's List.

Doesn't sound as if they live up to their advertising.

Angies List review in Traverse City, Michigan: Angie list is worthless

You have NOTHING on the companies I am looking to hire. One has been in business 25 years, the other is well known to menards and lowes, but you have NOTHING. Angie's list is like throwing your money out the window. Do Not Use! Any why to I have to input 100 words. You protect Angies list from compliants. My goal is to spread the word the old fashion way, word of mouth. This is a worthless. Do not buy or use Angie list. It's a major rip off. A waste of money and time. Do not use, do not buy, do not waste your time.

This is what is wrong with Angie's List. My company is on Angie's List with some nice reviews, but, we get a lot of calls from people who do not even know what we specialize in.

On the Angie's List site, there is no where for the company to display the product they are offering and provide pictures of it etc.

In short, we get calls for people who are looking for other products in which we have to refer them to someone else. This costs us time, gas and money.

Angies List review in Tampa, Florida: Scam Scam Scam

I purchased a Angie's list membership to look for pet sitters and lawn care providers in Tampa, FL, Angie's list doesn't inform their customers that you have a daily maximum limit on searching for different providers so if you're looking to make several searches on Angie's list in a day and you hit you're daily maximum search limit you're membership will be cancelled with no possibility of getting a refund. If I pay for a service who in the *** is Angie's list to tell me I can only search for 20 different companies per day. Angie's list is a scam keep away.

I shopped for and purchased a used car from Lindsay Honda and have never dealt with so much incompetence in my life. From the beginning, they had my address wrong and even though I told them about it repeatedly, they still did not get it right until it was time for me...

Angies List review in Little Rock, Arkansas: Angie's List a scam

I joined Angie's List and found that you could not post any reviews, good or bad, unless the person or company you used had paid to be on the list. Also, Hot Springs is very close to Little Rock. I tried to find a plumber there. I was charged another membership fee. When I called Angie's List to ask about the charge, I was told that they sometimes charged and sometimes didn't, depending on the number of people interested in checking out another city in the state. I asked how in the world I would know if they planned to charge me. The dummy on the phone said, "You won't. We just decide." I told them to cancel my membership. Angie is making a lot of money, but I'm not impressed with what I got for my money.

Angies List review in Apache Junction, Arizona: Breach Of Contract

Paid for complete water line replacement with copper. Some connections were made with flex plastic. can not get Courtesy Manufactured Home Plumbing to fulfill contract. When work was being done told the owner I paid for copper not plastic. Called two days later too see If he would honor the contract and they refused. I am filling complaints with BBB and Registrar of Contractors. Have received letter from Courtesy Manufactured Home Plumbing that since I gave them a bad review they would have no further contact. Since they had already said the would not honor the contract the letter seemed useless. Unless the have some slick legal way of getting out of doing there job.

Angies List review in Albany, New York: Nurse

I hired a contractor with great reviews on Angie's List. He was supposed to do some painting, repairs and make my house safer for my autistic son.He took a deposit, than I got an email that he filed a bankruptcy and moved to Florida. He paid us 500.00 back and I haven't been able to contact him.it's been over a year and my house is still a mess. Angie's list is not taking any responsibility. They made me re-join to re-open the case and than said that there is nothing they can do.i guess this is a lost cause

Had an issue with a contractor/roofer to reroof our home. They did the roof, and then it rained a couple of weeks later. A really hard driving rain that came in at an angle. Well, our roof LEAKED!! The old roof had never leaked it was just aging so we thought it was time. When this roofer gave us the bid (and it wasn't the low OR the high bid but the most comprehensive bid) it noted that ALL the flashing would be redone. In other words: REPLACED with NEW FLASHING. Well, Mr. Roofer Man didn't do that. In fact he damaged flashing that WAS there. I asked them to come back and fix it (not knowing why it leaked at the time) and the wife screeched at me on the phone etc. etc. I had to pay my regular guy/contractor/handyman to fix the flashing.

I reported this incident to Angie's List and this contractor was able to get this removed!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? So may question is "WHAT GOOD IS ANGIES LIST IF THEY NEVER EVEN BOTHERED TO CONTACT ME TO SEE IF WHAT THIS ROOFER TOLD THEM WAS TRUE?????" I tell people ALL the time that Angie's List is a scam and it's basically a way for contractors to PAY to get their name out there and then the consumer PAYS for the ad that way by subscribing! Can you say . . . . . RIP OFF??

And the roofing company was

Helton Roofing & FLASHING (what a joke!!)

in the Lexington, KY area!!!

If you love people with NO people skills whatsoever you should have a conversation with Mrs. Helton.

But be sure to have some cotton for your ears before you call.

Not sure why you would hire someone based on an online chat board. All you get is someone else's opinion, which could very well be the contractor himself.

Who's to know? You lost some money. Make this a learning experience.

Best to find a nice man with some mechanical/building skills and make him your friend. Then you would not need to take chances with unknown contractors.

@John N

@nikalseyn, It sounds like you a) don't understand how Angie's List works, and b) don't understand why one would be motivated to use it. You do realize that everyone can't simply "find a nice man with some mechanical/building skills", don't you?

I was looking for a service provider and found one that had at least four times the number of good reviews than the next listed one. When I contacted them and did some research I found why. Here's just a couple of things I found:

1. They have no license. It's apparently not required for their type of business. Fine, but when I looked at his site it says its because Orange County, CA charges $500 for one. If it was my business and I was supposedly doing so great, I would get the license in a heartbeat to reassure customers. And I sure wouldn't put that on my site!

2. He has a coupon for 10% off. Well, come to find out, you get your 10% back AFTER writing a review. Who would write a negative review? Although you would think even if it was a neg review he'd be obligated to return the 10% to the customer. Who knows? Needless to say I didn't use the company

I called Angie's and told them of my concerns. This is when I still thought Angie's list was on the legit. Of course they did nothing about this guy's dubious business practices; they said they'd "look into it." Yeah, right. He probably can't get the license because he pays Angie's so much! The 10% refund is nothing but plain ole bribery! :(

This is when I started to have misgivings and dug a bit deeper. Now the fun thing will be trying to cancel my membership. I've read that's it's about as hard as winning the lottery!
